![]() But if a speaker is placed inverted like that, it will move out as the other speakers move in, so it's expanding the volume of air inside the cabinet, reducing the amount of air that's compressed as the main speakers move back. I built several guitars at my shop in Buffalo, focusing on Jerry’s. After a chance encounter with a now close friend, Mike Hoganwho had built a Garcia-inspired guitar of his ownI set out to build a Tiger. That limits how linearly the speaker cone can move (well, other things can too, but we'll leave those alone for now) which affects how well it can reproduce the lowest notes. My quest started in 1998, in Buffalo, NY, when it dawned on me that there was not an existing option to buy a Jerry Garcia guitar. But think of what happens inside a sealed bass enclosure when the speakers move back they encounter increased resistance the further back they move by the amount of air that is compressed inside the speaker cabinet. So the sound is the same, just the dispersion is affected by the shape of the cone from having it inverted. If you think about it, the sound coming from the front of the speaker is the same as that coming from behind. Probably because it would give a more linear response to the lowest notes. I am not saying that was a crutch, his playing is his playing, I am just saying that the quality of what gets put down on the tape, the extra tonality and harmonics coming through, either in the studio or in what was a far-better-than-average-tour-recording setup- at least in the pre cassette days- plays a part in hearing the extra good bits he wants to convey.Ĭlick to expand.I'm guessing it would acoustically load the cabinet different, presumably because he liked the sound better that way. By the time he left mostly stock guitars and hooked up with Alembic all of the electronics were custom upgraded or built to pretty exacting levels I get a sense from the Gear Book that Jerry was very much into pushing the progression of his rig to get as much pure sound out of it as anyone ever could. ![]() ![]() Like you I am not a musician, but I agree with much of what you say about his style throwing out more notes than most, and his phrasings pulling out a greater range of tones but I would also not discount the impact his gear had on what you are hearing-there was a pretty huge focus by the band on finding a live sound, for both instruments and sound reinforcement, that was much more hi fi like in its approach to pure clean signal and power.įor example his guitar amp rig at one point turned into a Fender preamp into a McIntosh amp powering a custom cabinet with 3 JBL E120s.
